Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi taps CHI for homeless plan
Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi appointed two executives of Community Housing Innovations to a committee charged with developing a 10-year plan to end homelessness in the county. The distinguished panel is made up of nonprofit and faith-based service providers, government officials and three formerly homeless people.
Suozzi announced that CHI Chief Program Officer Elizabeth Starr Thomas and Long Island Director Rosemary Dehlow will help develop a blueprint for providing the services and housing that will eliminate the problem of homelessness in the county. Both are long-time CHI directors who have developed CHI programs on Long Island that have dramatically reduced the numbers of homeless families and single adults.
“The process of making 10-year plans has proven very successful in many cities across the country,” said Thomas, “and we applaud the county executive for taking this step.”
CHI has operated transitional and permanent housing programs in Nassau County for more than a decade, daily housing over 100 homeless and formerly homeless people.
“While homelessness is a complicated problem,” said Ms. Dehlow, “we now have enough experience to know what needs to be done. I’m excited to be part of developing the tools and resources to do it in Nassau County.”
