Acceptance of Personal Responsibility Leads to a New Life and a New Place to Live

This is the second in a series of stories describing homelessness today and the efforts that nonprofit organizations like Community Housing Innovations, Inc. are making to help clients find permanent housing and rebuild their lives.

Despite various obstacles, Yolanda Gregg was able to turn her life around and secure permanent housing, sobriety, and physical wellness. This client came to CHI’s Brentwood shelter on November 28, 2012. During her adult life, she found herself homeless three times, the last time for 18 months.

Rapidly Rehousing Homeless Families: New York City
Community Housing Innovations, Inc.Rapid rehousing or “housing first” has been heralded as the answer to ending family homelessness. New York City has the longest history with using rapid rehousing as a tool for placing homeless families into permanent housing. In this opinion brief, ICPH President and CEO Ralph Nunez points to New York City as a case study and takes a critical look at the long-term impact of federally driven rapid-rehousing policies. The brief raises fundamental questions about the effectiveness of rapid rehousing as a solution when it is used in a one-size-fits-all manner.
