Economic Conditions Drive Thousands to Nonprofits for Emergency Housing
With the economy continuing to take a toll on individuals and families over the past five years, more people are turning to the Department of Social Services for emergency housing. Faces of Homelessness Success Stories
Daphne Brown, Emergency Housing

Married and with a daughter, Ms. Brown moved from Florida in 2011. Unable to find an affordable place to live, she and her family moved in with her husband’s aunt, but when her husband left her and they filed for separation, his aunt told her and her daughter to leave. With no family of her own on Long Island, she turned to her local pastor for help. He referred her to the Department of Social Services, which was able to get her a place to stay at CHI’s Hidden Cove Shelter in Southampton. During her four months there, she studied to become a licensed realtor. She recently received her license and, after selling her first house, used her commission check to get her own place in Southampton, where she and her daughter live.

“When my husband left me, his family no longer wanted to help me or my daughter, and I had no family of my own here. Alex Abramowicz, who was my caseworker, and all the other CHI members were great. They encouraged me, they helped me and they kept in touch with me after I moved from Hidden Cove to see how I was adjusting. They really have the best interests of their clients at heart.”
